“The best toys are often the ones children discover new ways to use on their own. That is precisely what we find so wonderful about Stapelstein – movement and imagination are free to go hand in hand.” – Anja Lytzen, owner of Lirum Larum Leg

Stapelstein – Motor Skills Play with Balance, Movement and Imagination

With Stapelstein, the floor can quickly be transformed into a balance course, an island-hopping game, a tower or whatever else your child can imagine. The distinctive Stapelstein stepping stones are designed for open-ended play and movement, where there is no single right way to play. Your child can stack, balance, sit, build and experiment, while the elements can be combined in new ways as play develops. Stapelstein itself recommends the products for children aged 1 and up, highlighting open-ended play and freedom of movement as central aspects of its universe.

Stapelstein Stepping Stones – When the Floor Invites Movement

Stapelstein stepping stones can be used individually or combined to create small and large movement-based games. Place them on the floor as islands for your child to move between, stack them at different heights, or let your child decide what they should represent. In this way, ordinary play can become active play, focusing on skills such as balance, coordination and body awareness.

The individual Original elements are very lightweight – approximately 180 grams – while the manufacturer states that they can support a load of up to approximately 180 kg. They are made from EPP (expanded polypropylene) and produced in Germany. The material is durable, non-porous and easy to clean with soap and water.

Stapelstein can be used both indoors and outdoors, but the manufacturer recommends that the elements are not stored outdoors permanently. When used for balance play, they should be placed on a level, non-slip surface.

Stapelstein stacking toys – build, topple and start again

The name almost gives the game away: Stapelstein stacking toys invite children to build by stacking. But the possibilities go far beyond building a tower. Turn the elements over, sort them by colour, create little seats, use them as bowls in pretend play or build an imaginative obstacle course.

The open-ended design makes Stapelstein engaging for children of different ages. Younger children can explore the shapes by lifting, turning and stacking them, while older children can create more challenging movement-based games. The manufacturer highlights activities such as climbing, sitting, spinning, stacking, carrying and building different play worlds.

This also means that play does not necessarily look the same from one day to the next. Today, the elements might be stepping stones across a dangerous river – tomorrow, they could become a tower, a stool or part of an entirely new game

Stapelstein Play Furniture for Active Play at Home

The Stapelstein universe also includes dedicated movement furniture, created to give children space to tumble, move and explore their bodies through play. Here, the classic Stapelstein elements and balance board can be added as a natural part of play and used to build on existing setups, create new challenges and vary movement possibilities.

At the same time, the familiar Stapelstein Originals can be used flexibly in active, motor-skill-building play – as stepping stones, for stacking, balancing or as a small seat. This combination makes it possible to create a versatile movement play environment, which can evolve alongside your child’s ideas and need for new challenges. When playtime is over, the lightweight elements can easily be stacked and put away, so active play does not have to require large, heavy play equipment in the home.

The Stapelstein balance board adds an extra challenge to playtime.

If you would like to expand the play possibilities, a Stapelstein balance board – Stapelstein Board – can be combined with the Original elements or used on its own. The Board is designed with a focus on balance and can be used, among other things, for standing and rocking on, spinning, or as a base together with the other Stapelstein elements. It can be combined with all Stapelstein products.

While the stepping stones invite children to move from one element to another, the balance board introduces a different kind of movement. Children must tune into their bodies, adjust their posture and try to maintain their balance. This makes the combination especially engaging for play that develops balance, coordination and body control.

Stapelstein Board can therefore be a great addition if you already have stepping stones at home and would like to create new challenges without having to start an entirely new play universe.

Build Stapelstein balance courses that can be rearranged again and again.

One of the most obvious activities is to build Stapelstein obstacle courses. Here, your child can jump from one stone to the next, walk around the elements, balance on a Board or help decide what the next challenge on the course should be.

For example, try:

  • placing Stapelstein stepping stones at different distances
  • combining stepping stones and a balance board
  • letting your child build and modify the course themselves
  • creating a route through the children's bedroom or living room
  • combining the course with other motor-skills toys

The level of difficulty can be adjusted by moving the elements, allowing the same set to provide many different movement-based activities. For safety reasons, the manufacturer recommends stacking no more than three Original elements on top of one another when they are used for climbing

Stapelstein grows with your child’s way of playing.

Stapelstein is recommended for children aged one and over, but this play world extends well beyond a narrow age range. It is precisely the open-ended nature of the play that makes the elements useful in different ways throughout childhood.

For younger children, play may involve exploring, moving, stacking and stepping onto the elements. As they grow, children can build more complex Stapelstein balance courses, challenge their balance or use the elements in imaginative role play. And because, according to the manufacturer, the Original elements can withstand a load of up to approximately 180 kg, adults can also join in many of the movement activities.

This also makes a Stapelstein set an exciting gift idea for children who love being active, building and inventing their own games.
