Creepy Crawly - Ideas for Garden Activities with Children

The companionship with children during gardening is really cosy and rewarding for both parents and children. Here are some ideas for cosy activities with children in the garden. Create little havens in the spring sun.

Sow Seeds

On most seed packets, you'll find instructions on how deep the seed should be planted. A general rule of thumb is to sow at a depth equivalent to three times the seed's diameter, but there are certain exceptions. Some seeds need light to germinate and should be sown on the soil surface. Press these types of seeds into the soil with a planting trowel so the moisture helps them germinate. Children will love the experience of seeing something sprout and grow.

A Child-Friendly Vegetable Garden

By involving children in creating a vegetable garden, you provide them with insight into the exciting process from soil to table. Planting in raised beds might be easier to manage regarding weeds. Give them their own raised beds. A good idea is to choose crops that children like to eat and that grow quickly. Explain to children the process from soil to table along the way. Fast-growing crops could be spinach or radishes. It could also be carrots, potatoes, onions, or strawberries—something for every taste. Berry bushes are also something children love. Currants or raspberries—tart and sweet.

Make a Bonfire and Bake Twister Bread

Find some long branches in the garden that you can use as sticks for twisting bread. Make a regular bun dough and perhaps mix in raisins, nuts, or chocolate. Always a hit.

Elderflower Cordial in June

In June, elder trees bloom, offering the opportunity for delicious elderflower cordial. An easy and cosy activity with a sweet result that most children—and adults—love. This easy recipe for elderflower cordial is borrowed from the site 'Børn i byen'.

Elderflower Cordial (approx. 5 liters)
What you'll need:
60 elderflower heads
2 kg sugar (preferably organic cane sugar—it adds flavor)
5 organic lemons (washed and sliced thinly)
100 gr tartaric acid or citric acid (available at stores like Matas)
3 liters of boiling water
Optionally, a bit of sodium benzoate

Instructions:

Put everything into a large bowl or pot, and pour the boiling water over. Let it sit covered for 3 days in a refrigerator or other cool place. Strain it and pour it into clean, sterilized bottles.

Store in the fridge or freeze if there's no sodium benzoate. If you rinse the bottle in a bit of sodium benzoate before pouring in the cordial, it can last for months in the kitchen cupboard, prolonging the summer feeling well into the cold, dark winter.
