Beads and Pegboards – Creative Autumn Fun with the Kids

There’s something truly special about autumn. The days grow shorter, rain taps on the window a little more often, and suddenly many of our cosiest moments move indoors. And while we love getting out for a breath of fresh autumn air, it’s also lovely to come home, make something warm to drink and gather around an activity that naturally slows things down.

Creative play with beads and pegboards is one of those much-loved classics we keep coming back to.

Because beads have something truly special to offer. They don’t require lots of rules or a particular end result. You can follow a pattern, invent your own design or simply start with one colour and see where your imagination takes you.

And perhaps that’s exactly why beads have stood the test of time.

Explore our range of classic Hama beads and pegboards here.

Why is playing with beads so good for children?

When a child sits bent over a pegboard and carefully places one little bead after another, there’s actually a lot more going on than just cosy play.

Children use their fingertips to pick up and place the beads, keep track of colours and positions, and perhaps count their way through a pattern. It takes concentration, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.

At the same time, beading gives children the lovely satisfaction of creating something from scratch. First, the board is empty. Little by little, a design takes shape – and in the end, they have something they made themselves.

It might be a rainbow. A dog. A heart for Grandma. Or an imaginary creature that no adult can quite make sense of, but that the child knows EVERYTHING about.

And perhaps that last part is the most important of all.

Because beading doesn’t always have to be about getting it “right”.

Hama beads leave room for both patterns and freewheeling imagination

For many people, classic Hama beads are almost synonymous with the creative moments of childhood. At Lirum Larum Leg, we have a wide selection of colours, pegboards and complete sets, so play can be simple or grow into a big beading project.

Some children love having a clear design to follow. Others start with three pink beads in a corner and end up creating something no one could have imagined beforehand.

Both are wonderful ways to play creatively.

Following a pattern can help develop a child’s concentration and ability to work step by step, while free-form beading offers plenty of room to experiment with colours, shapes and their own ideas.

If you already have a good collection at home, you may only need to add some new colours or exciting new pegboards. If your child is just starting to take an interest in beads, a complete set makes a lovely and easy introduction.

Which Hama beads should you choose – Maxi, Midi or Mini?

Hama beads come in different sizes, which is really handy. The largest beads are well suited to little hands, while the smallest can be used to create detailed designs that call for a little more patience and precision. That means beading can grow along with your child.

Hama Maxi – big beads for little hands

Hama Maxi beads are the largest of the three types and are especially well suited to younger children. They’re easier to pick up and place on the pegboard while fine motor skills are still developing. Children can focus on colours, shapes and the joy of creating something themselves – without little fingers having to manage tiny beads.

That makes Maxi beads a lovely place to begin a beading adventure. Explore our selection of Hama Maxi beads here. You can also find a beautiful and inspiring inspiration booklet for Maxi beads

Hama Midi – the classic bead for hours of creative play

Hama Midi beads are probably the size most people think of when we say Hama beads. They strike a lovely balance: easy to work with, yet small enough for children to create beautiful patterns, shapes and designs with plenty of detail.

Midi beads open up a world of creativity, where children can follow a pattern from a bead book or let their imagination run free on the pegboard. They’re ideal for children who are ready to really immerse themselves in beading – and for those cosy afternoons when the whole family ends up gathered around the table.

Hama Mini – for getting stuck into the little details

Hama Mini beads are perfect for older children – and adults who’ve caught the beading bug, too. Their small size makes it possible to create more detailed and intricate designs, but they also call for greater precision, concentration and fine motor skills.

This is where you can really get absorbed in the process. Hama Mini is a wonderful next step for children who have already made lots of pegboard designs and want to challenge themselves with more detailed creations.

Whether you start with Maxi, have a big box of Midi beads on the craft table or have moved on to the tiny Mini beads, the idea is the same: make something with your hands, take time to get absorbed in it and enjoy watching a little idea take shape – one bead at a time.

Use beads as a little break

We all know those afternoons when the energy has run out after school or daycare. It’s dark outside, the weather isn’t exactly inviting you to spend two hours at the playground, and a screen can quickly feel like the easiest option.

A bowl of beads can be a surprisingly simple alternative.

Not because screen time is always a bad thing, but because children also benefit from activities where their hands are busy, their imagination has room to roam and there isn’t a constant stream of new things happening in front of them.

With beads, the pace is different.

One bead at a time.

Maybe a little conversation around the table.

“What colour should the dragon be?”

“Can you find a dark green one?”

“Look, Mum, I’ve made a pattern.”

They’re the little moments when you suddenly realise you’ve been sitting together for quite a while.

Make beading a cosy autumn tradition

Autumn is perfect for little creative projects.

Make orange pumpkins and little ghosts for Halloween. Create leaves in shades of red, yellow and brown. Make a little hedgehog or perhaps some mushrooms for the children’s room.

Later, swap the autumn colours for Christmas designs, snowflakes and little beaded decorations to hang on the Christmas tree.

That’s the lovely thing about beads for children: the same box can keep up with the seasons and your child’s interests.

A little tip is to keep the beads within easy reach. For example, sort them by colour into storage boxes, and keep the pegboards and patterns together in one place. That makes it much easier to say on a whim, “Shall we get the beads out?”

If you enjoy making things together in general, explore our world of creative play for children, where beading can be combined with drawing, modelling clay and other cosy craft activities.

When beading grows – and the ideas get a little bigger

First, you make a heart. Then a flower. Maybe a rainbow. And suddenly your child is sitting there with beads in front of them, ready to try something a little bigger.

Once you get into beading, it can be great fun to take things up a notch.

Pattern books are a wonderful way to explore the world of beading further.

They’re a little like treasure chests of ideas you can open when your imagination needs a nudge. Children can flick through the pages to find a design that catches their eye, get out their beads and pegboards, and hunt for just the right colours.

This is also where beading can become a little more involved. Bigger projects may require counting, keeping track of patterns and working on the design a little at a time. Some designs are finished in an afternoon, while others can wait until the next cosy moment. It can be a lovely way to practise focus, concentration and patience – without feeling like anything but play.

Perletid – when one pegboard suddenly becomes a whole little project

One of our favourites for children – and adults – who want to explore the world of beads a little further is Perletid by Anja Takacs.

It’s full of inspiration for taking beading further, with patterns for holidays and special occasions throughout the year. You’ll find ideas for Halloween, Christmas, birthdays, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, so it’s a book you can return to again and again.

And it’s not just about classic, flat pegboard designs. The book also features 3D patterns, where the beads can grow beyond the board to become little creations. It opens up a whole new way to play with the familiar Hama beads.

We love the idea of keeping a book like this with the beads. That way, the grown-up doesn’t always have to come up with the next project. You can flick through it together, choose something that looks fun and get the cosy creative process started.

Which beads are right for each age?

When choosing beads and pegboards for children, it’s a good idea to consider their age and fine motor skills.

For older preschoolers and school-age children, classic Hama Midi beads are a popular choice. The small beads make it possible to create far more detailed and intricate patterns. Many Hama Midi products are suitable from around age 5, but always check the age recommendation for the specific product and consider the individual child.

For younger children, there are larger Maxi beads, which are easier for little fingers to handle.

The most important thing is to choose an activity that feels right for your child. If the project is too difficult, the fun can quickly disappear. But when it offers just the right amount of challenge, you may see that lovely concentration take hold as your child almost forgets all about time and place.

When the rain taps on the window…

The great thing about playing with beads is…

It doesn’t have to be a big project.

You don’t need to plan the perfect creative afternoon or decide on the end result in advance. You can simply pour out the beads, get out a couple of pegboards and sit down around the table.

And while the autumn rain does its thing outside, a little yellow bead can become a bird’s beak, a green one can be the start of a dinosaur – and the grown-up beside them may well discover that beading is still just as cosy as it used to be.

Frequently asked questions about beads and pegboards

What age are Hama beads suitable for?

Hama beads come in different sizes to suit different ages and skill levels. Hama Maxi beads are large and easier for little hands to handle, while Hama Midi beads are the classic choice for children who are ready for smaller beads and more detailed designs. Hama Mini beads are very small and ideal for older children and adults who want to create more advanced bead projects. Always follow the age recommendation on the specific product.

What is the difference between Hama Maxi, Midi and Mini beads?

The main difference is their size. Hama Maxi beads are the largest and are ideal for little hands. Hama Midi beads are the classic medium size and are suitable for a wide range of pegboards and designs. Hama Mini beads are the smallest, allowing you to create highly detailed patterns, but they also require greater precision and fine motor skills.

Which Hama beads are best for beginners?

For younger children trying beads for the first time, Hama Maxi is a great place to start, as the large beads are easy to pick up and place. Hama Midi is an ideal choice for older children. A complete bead set with beads, a pegboard and a design makes it even easier to get started.

Which beads are suitable for 3-year-olds?

Large beads such as Hama Maxi can be a good choice for younger children, as they are easier for little fingers to handle than classic Midi beads. Hama Maxi is designed for children aged around 3 and up, but always follow the age recommendation for the specific product and take your child’s development into account. Young children should be supervised when playing with beads.

Which beads are suitable for children aged 5 and up?

From around the age of 5, many children can start using Hama Midi, the classic-sized Hama beads. Midi beads let children create both simple figures and more detailed patterns. However, a child’s fine motor skills and interests matter more than age alone, so always choose a level that suits the individual child.

What can children create with Hama beads?

With Hama beads, children can make everything from hearts, flowers, animals and rainbows to letters, figures and imaginative designs. Bead boards can also be used to create seasonal decorations such as Easter eggs, Halloween figures, Christmas decorations and snowflakes. Older children can follow more advanced bead patterns or try their hand at 3D figures.

The possibilities are almost endless. Children can make animals, figures, flowers, hearts, letters, holiday decorations, imaginative designs and much more. With creative bead books children can also follow patterns and find inspiration for more advanced projects.

Where can you find inspiration and patterns for fuse-bead creations?

You can let your child create freely or draw inspiration from patterns. A creative bead book is especially helpful when your child wants specific ideas and would like to try new designs. Browse our creative books here, or explore Hama beads and pegboards.

You can find inspiration for bead boards in bead books and inspiration booklets featuring ready-made patterns and designs. Your child can also use pictures for inspiration or draw their own pattern first. Bead books are especially useful when your child wants to try new and more challenging bead projects.

What are some easy things for beginners to make on bead pegboards?

Start with small designs featuring clear shapes and just a few colours. Hearts, flowers, smiley faces, fruit, rainbows and simple animals are great ideas for first pegboard creations. As your child becomes more familiar with the beads, you can gradually move on to larger boards and patterns with more colours and details.

What do children learn from playing with beads?

Bead activities combine creativity with concentration and fine motor skills. As children place small beads on a pegboard, they practise hand-eye coordination and precision while exploring colours, shapes and patterns. Following a bead pattern can also help strengthen their concentration and ability to work step by step.
