Why is good sleep for your baby so important?

A good and secure baby's sleep is crucial for both physical and mental development. During sleep, the brain processes the day's numerous impressions, new skills are stored, and the body grows and recovers. In the initial months, a baby can sleep up to 14–17 hours a day—albeit divided into shorter naps and sleep periods throughout both day and night. Both nap times and nighttime sleep are essential to ensuring good rest for the baby and creating a more balanced day-to-day life.

Sleep patterns change continually. Around 3–4 months, many babies start developing a more defined circadian rhythm, but disturbances can still occur—especially in connection with developmental leaps, new motor skills, or teething. In these cases, a comforting environment, consistent routines, and familiar elements surrounding your baby's bedtime can make a significant difference.

At the same time, it is important to remember that baby sleep impacts more than just the child. When the baby sleeps well—even during nap time—it gives mom (and the rest of the family) the opportunity for a much-needed break. These small breathing spaces throughout the day and a more cohesive nighttime sleep can be crucial for energy, recovery, and well-being in the early days. Therefore, good baby sleep not only ensures tranquility for the child but also fosters better balance for the entire family.

Create a Safe Sleeping Environment for Your Baby

If you want to create the perfect setting for your baby’s sleep and enjoy more peaceful nights, it’s all about the atmosphere you build around your little one. In this category, you’ll discover everything from soft baby bedding in breathable materials and safe babynests, to cozy voksiposer, beautiful baby blankets, crib bumpers, and soothing accessories like comfort cloths and mobiles. Every product is handpicked for its comfort, quality, and calm design—helping your baby feel secure as you move from day to night, whether they’re sleeping in a crib, bedside crib, or on the go in a stroller.

A babynest offers a gentle, snug embrace in those early months, while soft bedding and a temperature-regulating baby blanket help craft a cozy sleep space. For outdoor naps, a voksipose keeps your baby warm and safe so nothing disturbs their rest. Creating bedtime rituals with small, familiar touches—like using the same comfort cloth or keeping the lighting soft—can help your little one settle down and recognize it’s time for sleep.

If your baby is having a hard time sleeping, take a closer look at the daily routine. Overtiredness, too much stimulation, or unpredictable schedules can get in the way of restful sleep. Try to set a consistent bedtime flow, lower the lights well before putting your baby down, and keep surroundings gentle and calm. Some babies relax best when swaddled or with a more enclosed sleep space, while others prefer extra room to move. Baby sleep changes over time, so what works today might need a tweak tomorrow—flexibility and patience are just as important as choosing the right gear.

Sleep Guide – From Newborn to Older Baby

Baby sleep evolves significantly over the first year. What promotes good sleep for a baby at one stage may change just a few months later. Here, you will find a gentle guide to what many babies typically need – with respect for the fact that all children develop differently.

0–3 months: Closeness, rocking, and secure comfort

In the initial months, the need for physical contact and swaddling is substantial. Many newborns settle best when rocked in a parent's arms – or in a cradle with gentle motion. The rhythmic movement is reminiscent of the womb and helps regulate the baby's nervous system.

During this period, it can be beneficial to focus on:

  • A secure and bounded sleeping space
  • Calm surroundings free of excessive visual stimuli
  • A soft comfort cloth as a regular part of sleeping
  • Consistent, repetitive bedtime routines

Sleep for a 0–3 month-old baby is less about fixed times and more about recognizing signals such as yawning, restlessness, and a tired gaze.

3–6 months: Structure and emerging rhythm

As babies become more aware and motorically active, their needs change. Many begin to develop a clearer circadian rhythm, and set routines around bedtime become increasingly important.

At this stage, it can be helpful to:

  • Establish a fixed sequence for bedtime (bath, pajamas, song, bed)
  • Create a calm sleeping area with items like crib bumpers and soft baby bedding
  • Introduce clear “sleep signals” such as the same comfort cloth or mobile
  • Avoid too much stimulation just before bedtime

The baby is often more mobile in bed now, and a safe setup can contribute to more peaceful baby sleep.

6+ months: More independence – and new challenges

From around 6 months, many babies can sleep longer stretches at a time, but they also go through significant developmental milestones. As your baby learns to turn over, sit up, or crawl, sleep may be temporarily disrupted.

Here, familiarity becomes particularly important for ensuring good sleep for your baby:

- Maintain consistent routines – even during restless periods
- Ensure a safe and familiar sleep environment
- Allow your baby to find peace independently if it suits your family
- Maintain a calm atmosphere around naps

Some babies at this age need more space in their bed, while others still find comfort in being wrapped securely.

The most important thing to remember is that baby sleep is not linear. Development, temperament, and needs vary from child to child. It's not about doing everything “right,” but about finding the solution that offers the most peace and security for your baby – and for you as parents.

FAQ – Sleep Time and Baby Sleep

How much should a baby sleep?

Newborns can sleep up to 14–17 hours a day across several periods. The need for sleep gradually decreases, but it varies from child to child.
How can I create a good sleep environment for my baby?

A good sleep environment begins with a tranquil setting: dim lighting, muted colors, and a consistent routine. Familiar items such as baby bedding, a bed bumper, a comfort cloth, or a night lamp can act as cues that it is time to sleep. Establishing a regular bedtime rhythm provides familiarity and comfort, but always adjust to meet your child's individual needs.
Is a cot bumper a good idea?

A sengerand brings comfort and security to your baby's cot, wrapping them in a soft, protective embrace. It also cushions the edges, helping to prevent your little one from bumping against the bars during sleep or gentle movement.
My baby sleeps very restlessly - what can I do?

Restless baby sleep can be caused by many factors—developmental leaps, teething, or new motor skills. For some babies, weighted plush toys, heartbeat toys or rhythmic mobiles can have a calming effect. The most important thing is to create predictability and a secure environment around bedtime. Remember that sleep patterns can vary significantly from child to child, and periods of restlessness are a natural part of development.
When does a baby develop a regular sleep routine?

It's challenging to define babies' sleep patterns based solely on age, as every baby is different. Many find that a more stable routine emerges around 3–4 months, but variations are completely normal.
What should you choose for your baby’s sleep time during the first 0–3 months?

For newborns aged 0–3 months, sleep is all about feeling safe and staying at a comfortable temperature. Many parents opt for a soft baby duvet, a little nusseklud and a gentle night light to create a soothing atmosphere for your baby’s sleep. A voksipose can also be a reassuring alternative to the pram, helping to keep your baby warm and snug during outdoor naps. But remember, every newborn is unique—some little ones need lots of cuddles in the first months, while others quickly settle into sleeping in their own cot.
What does a baby around 6 months old need when they're going to sleep?

Around the age of 6 months, many babies begin to establish a more stable daily rhythm. However, there can still be periods of restlessness associated with new developmental stages. A safe and familiar sleeping space with soft baby bedding, a comforting security blanket, and perhaps a soothing mobile above the crib can support your baby's good sleep. At this age, repetition and consistent routines often play a crucial role in creating healthy sleep habits.
Which crib should I choose?

Choosing the right baby bed depends on your needs, your living situation, and most importantly, your baby. Some children sleep best close to mom and dad, while others quickly adapt to sleeping in their own bed. There's no single correct choice—but here is an overview of the most popular options and their benefits:

Crib

A classic crib is a safe and stable choice for nighttime sleep. It offers good ventilation around the baby and often can be used for several years. Many models come with adjustable bases, allowing you to change the height as your baby becomes more mobile. Our cribs from both Sebra and Oliver Furniture also offer the option to convert into a junior bed, providing a future-proof solution.

Cradle

A cradle is compact and can be ideal for the early days. The gentle rocking motion can be soothing and help the baby relax. Cradles are typically used only for the first few months until the child becomes more active and starts to turn over.

Bedside Crib

A bedside crib or Oliver Furniture's Co-sleeper sits close to the parents' bed and makes it easy to create closeness during the night. It's a popular solution for newborns as it combines safety with an independent sleeping space. It can be particularly practical for nighttime nursing and frequent awakenings.

Babynest

A babynest provides an enclosed and defined sleeping space which can offer comfort—especially for very small babies who are still accustomed to the close comfort of the womb. A babynest is usually used on a firm, secure surface.

Hammock Cradle

A hammock cradle can be a great option for daytime naps as the gentle movement can help the baby feel at ease. However, it is not recommended as a permanent solution for nighttime sleep, where a more stable and approved sleeping place is preferable.

Regardless of which baby bed you choose, it's crucial to follow the current safety guidelines and consider your child's needs. Baby sleep evolves through phases, and what works in one period may change in the next. At Lirum Larum Leg, we're happy to help you find the solution that best suits your family and creates a safe sleeping environment for your baby.
