Frequently Asked Questions about Fastelavn

When should I buy Shrovetide costumes?

Purchasing your carnival costume early is a smart move, ensuring you secure your desired outfit and avoid any last-minute stress before the party.

However, keep in mind that children often change their minds about costumes and quickly shift interests, so make sure you choose the perfect one.
When is Fastelavn?

Fastelavn always falls 7 weeks before Easter. In 2026, Fastelavn is on Sunday, February 15th. However, many people celebrate Fastelavn over several days – in institutions, schools, towns, and at home – often throughout the week leading up to Fastelavn Sunday.
What is Fastelavn?

Fastelavn is an ancient tradition with roots dating back to the Middle Ages, originally signifying the lead-up to Lent. Today, Fastelavn is celebrated as a joyous occasion for children—filled with costumes, festivities, play, and charming traditions.

One of the most well-known traditions is 'slå katten af tønden', which translates to 'hit the cat out of the barrel'. Centuries ago, the cat symbolized evil, and it was believed that you could ward off misfortune by striking it out of the barrel. Thankfully, the tradition has transformed significantly: the barrel now contains candy and small surprises, and the game focuses on community, excitement, and fun. The child who knocks the bottom out becomes 'kattedronning', and the one who knocks down the last plank is crowned 'kattekonge'.

Today, Fastelavn is a celebration of children's imagination and joy in dressing up, playing together, and creating memories—whether at schools, daycares, or at home with family and friends.
What should you dress up as for Fastelavn?

At Fastelavn, children can dress up as absolutely anything they dream of. There are no limits—only imagination sets the boundaries.

Some of the most popular Fastelavn costumes for children include princesses and fairies, inspiring magical adventures, as well as superheroes that embody strength and courage. Pirates and police officers are also firm favorites—especially for youngsters who enjoy action and role play. Plus, animal costumes are in great demand, particularly among the youngest children, because they’re soft, comfortable, easy to move in, and, of course, completely adorable.

Above all, a Fastelavn costume should make your child feel safe and comfortable, so there's plenty of room for playful fun and movement all day long—whether celebrating Fastelavn at their institution, at a party, or at home.
Which Carnival costume should I choose for my child?

When selecting a carnival costume for your child, it's a good idea to consider the child's age, interests, and daily routine. The most important thing, of course, is that your child gets to dress up as something they truly dream of – after all, carnival is about imagination and play.

At the same time, it might be worth considering where the costume will be used. If it will be worn at daycare or school, choosing a costume that's easy to put on and take off can be beneficial, allowing your child to manage bathroom visits and changing independently. If the carnival costume will be used outdoors, it's wise to choose an outfit that accommodates extra layers underneath to keep your child warm.

For younger children, costumes that are soft, lightweight, and flexible are often recommended, ensuring they are not restrictive and allow for good freedom of movement. Older children often appreciate more elaborate costumes with accessories, capes, or hats – here, finding a balance between appearance and comfort is advisable.

In short: The best carnival costume is one that your child loves to wear, can move freely in, and which suits both the occasion and their needs.
Are there Carnival costumes available for young children?

Yes, at Lirum Larum Leg, you will find costumes for young children, including options for 2-year-olds, toddlers, and preschoolers—all designed with comfort and freedom of movement in mind.
What do you need for a Shrovetide party?

For a traditional carnival party, you'll typically need carnival costumes for children, a carnival barrel, festive decorations, and treats. To add an extra layer of fun, you can easily swap out the classic carnival barrel with a piñata for even more enjoyment and play.
Can Carnival costumes be reused?

Absolutely! Many Fastelavn costumes are perfect for role play, dress-up games, birthdays, and themed parties all year round. This way, you're making sure your costume isn't just for one occasion. Kids often enjoy imaginative play and love reusing their costume again and again, even when it's not Fastelavn.
